Twin Towers, The Symbols of Sept 11, 2001 Tragedy, Remembered

June 1997: Twin Towers may be gone, but they are still there in many memories like this

The prime target of the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center may be gone, but the memories are with us for more reasons than one.

The above picture of mine (another rare shot in which I am smiling) with twin towers in the background was only supposed to be a family memory. The shot was taken in late June, 1997 from Ellis Island. The weather was pleasant the whole day, especially in the evening. That evening all of us went to the ROOF of one of the towers (south tower?). We did not plan it that way, but amidst a gentle breeze we witnessed sunset on the western horizon from the roof top of Twin Towers. What a great sight it was! What a nostalgic memory it turned out to be for all of us!

I joined Mason in 2000. A couple of months after joined, a loiter came to my office, saw the plain walls and asked me if I don’t like any artwork. [Most universities have “open doors” policy. So, loitering happens.] I jokingly said I don’t have any artwork to hang on my walls. He then pulled some framed artwork from his box. I would have bluntly told him to leave my office if it weren’t for the first picture he pulled out was that of the Twin Towers, captured on a picture perfect day. Two for $25! Just for that pic, I bought two and both of them are on my office walls today. The Twin Towers on my office wall remind me of one of the many positive things this country stand for – ingenuity!

The towers, though gone, are symbols of strength and character of America. They may look distant in the picture above, but they are very close to my heart.

Now watch these towers through the eyes of a TV commentator and many film makers.

From 1969 to 2001, the Twin Towers made countless cameos in Hollywood films. Sometimes featured prominently in the foreground, sometimes lurking in the distance. This montage celebrates the towers’ all-too-short film career with songs that capture the passing decades. Man, I miss them.
