Apple to drop Google Maps

I think this is imminent! Given the way these two companies are at loggerheads, this is bound to happen. Each of these companies immensely benefited from the ‘maps’ app when iPhone was launched way back in 2007. But differences flared up when Google started slowing the update of features of maps on iOS and started coming up with those features ahead of time on android devices. It is just like the way Microsoft tried to take advantage of making IE for so many default features in windows trumping firefox etc! But now Apple has enough clout to counter this so they are coming up with their own maps technology(or acquired one). It is again the case where the two giants are set to lose out on unnecessary competition! But the users will gain either way.

Another Soon to be Popular “Rant” by Santelli

Back in 2009 Rick Santelli had a famous rant against the purported Obama Admin bailout of home owners with underwater mortgages. He claimed that the outburst was spontaneous -- it was anything but. Several traders joined the chorus and proclaimed that they will have a ‘tea party’ to protest that socialist ‘outrage’ by the administration. He more or less called the fat cats -- CME traders -- a “silent majority.” However, that rant marked pretty much the birth of a ‘Tea party movement.’

While I agreed with “no bailouts for anybody” philosophy, the former trader Rick’s outrage was against people with underwater mortgages being bailed out. His outrage against the Wall Street pigs was rather muted.

Well -- today he has another interesting rant. This will sure to make some headlines soon.

Economy in a Democracy

Throughout the human history there were always ups and downs of economy. Barring natural calamities, one wonders what can cause an economy to go down, when most of the people consume and are materialistic! Are humans that foolish collectively so as not to see what is going wrong? Why do many people look to short cuts for gains at the expense of others? All these are philosophical questions. But there are some who can see what is wrong and can try to bring it to light. Watch this video about a book “The Gardens of Democracy” by Eric Liu & Nick Hanauer. The things that make common sense in present day democracies are told in a very lucid way and one wonders why is it so difficult to get, for some people?!

When the Republican party is so much obsessed with ‘promoting small government’ and Democratic party appears (in my view they try to tend to their base this way) to be obsessed with having ‘as big a government as possible’, it is refreshing to see a perspective in this from the authors who say the Government has to be really about “Big on What and Small on How”. This means the government should really pave the way for many ambitious projects which the private sector balks at even considering and then should make sure that is done in the smallest expense possible, this can be even by privatizing it in pieces that are needed. I think where democrats and republicans fail is in pulling this to the extremes.

The other thing that I kind of always felt how dimwits anyone can be to not see how the economy needs to be rejuvenated is, how reducing the taxes on top 1% or let us say top 5% earners will not create lot of jobs! Do they really know what they are talking about? Let us say someone earns a million dollars and the current tax they pay is say 25%. By reducing it to 20% that person saves $50000. How many decent jobs, he or she can create? one or two? That too if they create! Some may say, oh they may spend the money so the economy can thrive! So how many pairs of clothes or shoes or ipads can one person consume?! That too if they spend! And what do they do with rest of the money? To evade taxes they may not even declare and stash in different ways including putting them in Swiss banks! On the other hand if the money is given to 10 people who are earning $100000, they would buy 10 pairs of cloths, shoes and ipads. It is a simple math, which the right wingers are trying to not acknowledge and hence hood-wink lot of people. Anyway all this is well said in the video and put in a very scientific way. A must watch.

By the way, later part of the interview is with Irshad Manji, a reformist islamist which is a riveting one too but that is another subject!

Mary Tappan Letter about Swami Vivekananda

Mary Tappan Wright who was a novelist in 1900′s wrote a letter to her mother about Swami Vivekananda. It is not an exaggeration to say Swami Vivekananda conquered the United States spiritually. He taught spiritual things to the Foreigners while back home he wanted young males to stop reading sacred texts and sacrifice for the country by doing work. He is one of the best role models for the youth, even today.

My dear Mother:

We have been having a queer time. Kate Sanborn had a Hindoo monk in tow, as I believe I mentioned in my last letter. John went down to meet him in Boston and missing him, invited him up here. He came Friday in a long saffron robe that caused universal amazement. He was a most gorgeous vision. He had a superb carriage of the head, was very handsome in an oriental way, about thirty years old in time, ages in civilization. He stayed until Monday and was one of the most interesting people I have yet come across. We talked all day all night and began again with interest the next morning. The town was in a fume to see him; the boarders at Miss Lane’s in wild excitement. They were in and out of the Lodge (the Wright’s cottage] constantly and little Mrs. Merrill’s eyes were blazing and her cheeks red with excitement. Chiefly we talked religion. It was a kind of revival; I have not felt so wrought up for a long time myself! Then on Sunday John had him invited to speak in the church and they took up a collection for a Heathen college to be carried on strictly heathen principles-whereupon I retired to my corner and laughed until I cried.

He is an educated gentleman, knows as much as anybody. Has been a monk since he was eighteen. Their vows are very much our vows, or rather the vows of a Christian monk. Only Poverty with them means poverty. They have no monastery, no property, they cannot even beg; but they sit and wait until alms are given them. Then they sit and teach people. For days they talk and dispute. He is wonderfully clever and clear in putting his arguments and laying his trains (of thought) to a conclusion. You can’t trip him up, nor get ahead of him. I have a lot of notes I made as stuff for a possible story -at any rate as something very interesting for future reference. We may see hundreds of Hindoo monks in our lives-and we may not.
