Ladies and gentlemen,

A couple of guys, may be even the same person with different aliases, have been spamming facebook with slander about me, the Tharanga team and Tharanga. I first ignored it as childish. The relentless campaign continued all through the night and probably will continue for some time. It is not my style not to respond to criticism. However, my responses would have to involve business colleagues and members of my team -- now and in the past. Hence the restraint on my part.

If I must respond, I will do so at an appropriate time and place. Until then, I will take the high road and ignore the noise makers. As a reminder to the trolls, I would like to add that not only I am blessed with good memory, I also keep meticulous records.

Finally, success has many fathers and failure is an orphan. I heard that a new father has now emerged for TORi.

With a simple ceremony, we formally launched Tharanga Media on January 14th, 2012 at our new operating office on Rd No. 10 Banjara Hills. The event was attended by about 70 friends and family members of Tharanga team and listeners of Mohana Muralee GaanaLahari. The subtext: listeners to us are also friends and family.

Tharanga Media is a multi-medium based social network, where patrons are educated and entertained through audio, text and video content. Tharanga is available in all major Indian languages. Hindi, Telugu, Tamil for now – more to follow later.

About Tharanga logo: The twisted infinity logo signifies an endless loop of waves, which is symbolic of Tharanga. Just as the waves are restless and unstable, so does the font selected for Tharanga look. The caption, ‘It’s your wavelength’ is loaded with message.

Updates:

• Tharanga live shows and other schedules are in the works.
• We are also sorting through a lot of administrative issues and resolving start-up delays one-by-one.
• Tharanga-Telugu schedule will be finalized today.
• Hopefully we will have the first live show on Jan 16 itself, but all live shows will start airing reliably after Jan 23.
• Tharanga iPhone app has already been submitted a couple of weeks ago, we are expecting approval from Apple this week.
• Tharanga Android app will likely be available this week.

Dear TORi listener,

First of all, Happy New Year and thank you for all the support and encouragement you have given to me while I was heading TORi.

I owe you an explanation.

As I have recently stated publicly, due to certain developments I had to part with TORi. It will be unprofessional to divulge all the details and the circumstances that led to my departure. However, at the heart of the issue are a) my desire to expand to other languages, b) install professional management and make the radio grow and be self-sustainable, and c) as in Apple’s vision -- ‘make a ding in the universe’

These ideas led to the new concept Tharanga, where the very name itself is not pigeonholing the entity to a single language. (More details on Tharanga in another post). Nevertheless, my passion for Telugu -- the language, the culture and the people -- remains the same. The baby of the house becomes the kid of the neighborhood, and then in its natural progression becomes the citizen of the village, state, country and then eventually the citizen of the world. That’s why, Tharanga is the logical next step to TORi.

Tharanga venture has been in the works for a few months with TORi as a part. I waited nearly a year to work things out to make this happen. Things didn’t go as hoped. Suffice it to say that the decision to part with TORi is difficult but not emotional. It has been thoroughly vetted and there are no second thoughts about the decision. As I have been publicly stating, I have feelings for people, but not for inanimate objects or abstract concepts like TORi. I want to maintain those positive relationships I nurtured while I was spearheading TORi.

I felt that this is the right time to reach out to you, thank you for all the support you have given me in the past, seek your support and understanding going forward. Tharanga is going to be unveiled on January 14th at 6:30 PM in Hyderabad, at small gathering of family and friends and few loyal listeners. My sincere apologies for keeping all of you in the dark about these development. It is a business decision and had to be treated as such and therefore the secrecy. I wish I can reach out to you individually over phone and talk.

Tharanga is the logical next step to TORi. It may be confusing to you for some time. It may be new name, new roof, new team but the same soul and same spirit as TORi: “One family.”

In any event, I hope you will support Tharanga with the same enthusiasm as you supported TORi. Remember, I may be walking away from TORi, but I am taking the spirit of TORi with me.

Dear friend of TORi

I am a major consumer of radio ever since I started remembering things. Somewhere in my early adulthood, I had some ideas about creating a radio that suits to my taste and attracts like-minded people to listen to songs and other shows. The embodiment of this vision is TeluguOne Radio on Internet, popularly known as TORi.

After starting TORi with about 6000 songs in my digital database, I oversaw the database to grow to nearly 20,000 with a good 65% of them tagged with my own hands. On the first day of broadcast I remember the peak listener count to be well below 100. I remember the moment when the simultaneous listeners exceeded 100. Contrast this to an estimated 100,000 listeners TORi boasts today. The vision of community building global community has been materialized. Did you ever imagine get-togethers by consumers of something you have created? In many respects, TORi is a pioneer, a trailblazer and a mini cultural phenomenon. Today, TORi is a companion for the long drives, productive mate for the music lovers at work, and a talking friend to the bored person at home.

Today, 5 1/2 years since the original launch and full 6 years since the original push to start TORi, I step back and look at TORi not only with a sense of pride but also with a sense of gratitude towards those thousands of loyal followers. I cannot thank enough the entire team -- especially my fellow senior management team at ObjectInfo, Durga Prasad and the whole TORi team, sound engineers, RJs -- past and present.To you, my dear TORi listener, thank you for being a friend and a loyal follower. I sincerely thank you for your patronage of TORi.

And now to the news. Due to certain disagreements about the future direction of TORi, and other personal issues I expressed my interest in no longer leading the efforts at TORi. Consequently the last airing of MMGL on TORi will be on January 13, 2012.

Yes, you heard it right. I am walking away from TORi, my own creation. As they say, all good things must come to an end. Bye, bye! TORi, we will miss each other.

I am only walking away from TORi, but not from the spirit of a community our team had built around the concept of TORi. Yes, a reinvigorated Mohana Murali Gaana Lahari will continue after some gap. But not on TORi.  Stay tuned to learn what future holds.

Vince Sampson, president, Education Finance Council, said during a panel at the IMN ABS East Conference in Miami Monday that lenders are no longer pushing loans to people who can’t afford them.

A key reason why a preponderance of the population is fascinated with the student loan market is that as USA Today reported in a landmark piece last year, it is now bigger than ever the credit card market. And as the monthly consumer debt update from the Fed reminds us, the primary source of funding is none other than the US government. To many, this market has become the biggest credit bubble in America. Why do we make a big deal out of this? Because as Bloomberg reported last night, we now have prima facie evidence that the student loan market is not only an epic bubble, but it is also the next subprime! To wit: “Vince Sampson, president, Education Finance Council, said during a panel at the IMN ABS East Conference in Miami Monday that lenders are no longer pushing loans to people who can’t afford them.” Re-read the last sentence as many times as necessary for it to sink in. Yes: just like before lenders were “pushing loans to people who can’t afford them” which became the reason for the subprime bubble which has since spread to prime, but was missing the actual confirmation from authorities of just this action, this time around we have actual confirmation that student loans are being actually peddled to people who can not afford them. And with the government a primary source of lending, we will be lucky if tears is all this ends in.

• Says a sustained effort is underway at some schools to bring in out-of-state tuition, which typically pay 100% of the cost
• Barbara Lambotte, a senior credit officer at Moody’s said during the panel that student loan lenders are chasing the same potential borrowers
• Everybody is going after borrowers with co-signers and high FICOs, also students who may be going to the better schools: Lambotte
• Gary Santo, a MD at First Marblehead said during the panel that borrowers too are being more conservative in theirchoice of education funding
• Lambotte said Moody’s outlook on private student loan ABSmarket is negative, but newer loans should perform better

To be sure, when the implications of the $850+ billion student loan bubble blowing up spread through the financial markets, it will make subprime seem like a tame walk in the park.

Of course, nobody will care about it until it is too late. Just like every other time because this time is never different.

Tomorrow (Wed) morning Apollo Group (parent company of University of Phoenix) is reporting. It could get very interesting. [I am expecting them to report in-line and warn big time. The stock [APOL] closed above $43 today, could see low 30s tomorrow.]

‘This is a time to rig for Survival‘

“I don’t think it’s a time to make money - this is a time to rig for survival,” said Charles Stevenson, president of hedge fund Navigator Group Inc. and head of the co-op board at 740 Park Ave. The building, home to Blackstone Group LP chairman Stephen Schwarzman and CIT Group Inc. chief executive John Thain, was among those picketed by protesters Tuesday. “The future is not going to be like a past we knew,” he said. “There’s no exit from this morass.”
