Famous Telugu lyricist, poet, orator, and movie director Sri Jonnavittula Ramalingeswara Rao garu rarely gives interviews. I had the good fortune of interviewing him not once, but twice for TORi audience. The first of the two interviews took place in Nov 2008.

In this part 1 of the interview, Sri Jonnavittula shared his experiments with lyrics for such songs as 1) Sanskrit disco, 2) thitla dandakam, and 3) Rupee dandakam. We had a light hearted discussion about the sensational hit song: jinthaka thika thika jinthaka tha (Vikramarkudu).

Here is the interview most of you have been waiting for a long time. I consider this interview to be the best of all the interviews I have done thus far.

I am always happy to meet scholars and the erudite. When I met Sri Medasani Mohan, I was happy. When I got to interview him for Mohana Muralee GaanaLahari, I was happier. When he praised me for the way I conducted the interview, I was on cloud nine.

Just one sour note -- I was a terrible host for him. When the interview was done, it was almost 3:30 PM. He had to be at the temple by 4 PM. He was hungry. There was no time to cook anything. Indian restaurants were closed. Only a little upma was left at home. He insisted that we share that. To this day, I feel very sad for sending him from my home with half-empty stomach.

Hope you got a chance to listen to part 1 of this interview with Paruchuri Gopalakrishna.

Again, who needs introduction to Paruchuri brothers? I had the opportunity to interview the younger of two, Sri Paruchuri Gopalakrishna, in August 2007. I am sure he has given hundreds of interviews in 30+ years of his career as a writer. I would like to think that this one is different and better than any you have seen.

In this second part, Sri Paruchuri talks about the intricacies of Telugu movies, which is the topic for his Ph.D. dissertation at Osmania University. Dr. Paruchuri also talked about his mother, who was the motivating force behind his decision to add the title, “Dr.” in front of his name. Many wondered why NTR’s Adaviramudu was a sensational hit in 1977. If you also wondered about it, Sri Paruchuri has an answer for you.

Who needs introduction to Paruchuri brothers? I had the opportunity to interview the younger of two, Sri Paruchuri Gopalakrishna, in August 2007. I am sure he has given hundreds of interviews in 30+ years of his career as a writer. I would like to think that this one is different and better than any you have seen.

In 1982, when NTR stormed to power in a short-time after founding Telugu Desam, Two Eenaadus were credited for helping NTR’s wave. The first was Eenadu news paper and the second was Eenaadu, the movie (acted by Krishna). In this part, Sri Paruchuri talks about the background of his writing for a movie Eenaadu. He also talked about how a short story by Kodavatiganti Kutumbarao was developed into a full length movie by the name Chali Cheemalu. The movie, was a major success at box office: thanks mainly to the dialogues written by Paruchuri Brothers. Nutan Prasad’s performance was the highlight in this movie. His catch phrase was, “nootokka jillaala andagaadni.”

Is this the main ‘campus’ of Tri Valley University? Any way, this fraud of a university was busted by DHS. Knowingly or unknowingly hundreds of students are caught in this mess, a vast majority of them are Indian. I touched base with immigration attorney Mrs. Prashanthi Reddy on this subject.

On Dec 20, The day started with a surprise and then turned eventful. The surprise was that I unexpectedly met a number of senior officials of TANA at Hyderabad Airport (Sorry – I cannot bring myself to call it so-and-so airport.) After we landed in Chennai, we got stuck in traffic – in near standstill conditions – for 3 hrs.

On Dec 21st, we were to try our brand new technical experiment – connect her to her worldwide fans via a TORi Live show. Due to poor internet availability, the experiment failed. We ended up recording the interview on camera. With all that stress, I am not sure how this interview turned out. I guess it is OK.

Rao Chalasani on Financial Crisis (2 of 2)

Mr. Rao Chalasani was a veteran Wall Street economist who retired in 2000. His long career included stints as the chief economist at Everen Securities which later became First Union Securities. Currently FUS is a unit of Wells Fargo. In the 90s he was frequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal. He was one of the straight shooters on Wall Street and one of the few whom I respected and I paid a lot of attention.

I mentioned about Mr. Rao on this blog some time ago when I talked about quants. I caught-up with Rao to make sense out of the Euro crisis. Even though Rao is retired and claims that he is not in touch with what is going on in the markets lately, he is as sharp as ever. This 40 min long interview sheds light on a number of fundamental reasons for current state of world’s financial mess. Those who followed me on my Teluguone Radio show or read my articles on various blogs might find that my views are eerily similar to his views.

I caught up with Dr. JP during his recent visit to USA. In this interview Dr. JP detailed the purpose of his visit, clarified his stance on the Telangana issue. Interview With Yandamuri Veerendranath

As I grew up, I am not reading as much Telugu literature -- especially Telugu fiction. But, as a teenager I read just about everything Yandamuri wrote. I read his first novel “Rushi” when it came out as a supplicant to Swathi monthly. I immediately wrote a letter to him as soon as I read that novel -- but I never mailed it. He shot to stardom a few year later with his legendary novel “Tulasi Dalam.”

One day in 1988, we flew together from Hyderabad to Madras -- we sat in the same row. I could not bring myself to talk to him then because I did not want him to consider me as one of millions of fans. Rather, I wanted him to know me as one of the few people who recognized his talent very early in his career as a novelist.

Nearly 20 years later I got that chance. I started corresponding with him. The result of our e-mail correspondence is this interview. I consider this interview (done in October 2007) as one of the best interviews I conducted on TORI.

Who needs introduction to Dr. JP? Don’t answer that.. It hits home! For, I needed an introduction to JP as recently as 2 1/2 years ago when listeners on my show kept asking me to interview him. A few went on to say that I even talk much the same things he usually talks about. (Yes, a shameful plug for myself.)

I was able to see JP garu in action and talk to him during the 2009 Indian general elections. We discussed the conversion of Lok Satta, the movement to Lok Satta, the political party; concentration of economic development and urbanization; health care; inspiring youth.

On the occasion of Dr. JP’s impending US visit, I thought this is apt to rollout this podcast from my show archives.

Disclaimer: I admire JP and I think he is an off-beat politician with charisma and right ideas. But, I do not belong to Lok Satta or any other political party.

Say No to Bottled Water (in USA)

In the USA, a liter of bottled water costs pretty much the same, or even less than a liter of gasoline (petrol). What is wrong with this picture? Sure, we may have a right to sell tap water at higher cost per liter than the cost of gas -- as long as there are enough people willing to pay those prices. We go to war(s) to protect our “right” to get cheap gas.

More than two years ago I chatted with my colleague, Professor Mark Houck about the craze for bottled water. Professor Houck said succinctly, “If you want bottled water you should buy a bottle, and each day fill it out of the tap.” (Listen to the full conversation in the podcast.)

In that chat, we didn’t have a chance to talk about the commercialism and environmental degradation. Well, this video fills that gap. Between the two -- you should have a different perspective on bottled water. If nothing else, this should save you some money. Don’t even say that this blog is not useful.

Prof Katta on Guluteness (తెలుగుదనాలు)

Professor Katta Murthy of University of Michigan is one of the very few Indian Americans who immigrated to the United States in the 60s. He has not forgotten what it meant to be a Glute nor did he forget what defines a Telugu person. He wrote an essay on Teluguness or “తెలుగుదనాలు.” The essay is a compilation of his memories from childhood, student life and travels. When I accidentally discovered the essay on internet, I called him to have a chit chat for Mohana Murali Gaaalahari. The podcast is available at the end of this write-up.

Suguna Narayan: An ‘ABCD’ Who Shames IBCDs with her Telugu

Next time you hurl an insult at a second generation Indian American (I consider the term ‘ABCD’ as a minor insult, OK?), I want you to think twice. Well, I can go on ranting about why ‘ABCD’ is an insult, but I will be brief. When you call someone ‘confused,’ that would mean that you are a person with clarity of thought and a clear vision. Are you? Forget ‘vision’ part. Do you at least know your own ABCD (no pun intended)? A better way to pose the same question: మీకు మీ “అ, ఆ, ఐ, ఈ” సరిగ్గా తెలుసా?

In this interview, I talked to Suguna Narayan, a Colorado native and a second generation Indian American. Suguna was born and brought up in US, and she speaks flawless Telugu. She was one of the select few students who won the Presidential Scholarship in 2005 -- a distinction only two students in every state gets in any given year.

Keep aside her academic achievements and language skills, she made her parents proud, and the community proud by simply being an ‘educated citizen’ and by rightly questioning a powerful US Congressman, Bill Berens. Thanks to her letter to a local paper and the subsequent mishandling of the situation by Berens, the congressman lost the election in Nov 2006.

For a while I wanted to cover I wanted to do a show on this topic. I have some knowledge on this subject but it does not measure up to that of Nalamotu Chakravarthy. He was kind enough to participate on the 3rd anniversary show of MMGL to talk to the listeners about this exact subject.

February 9th, 2010 marks the third anniversary of Mohana Muralee GaanaLahari.

In this first part of a three part series, Chakravarthy and I talked about how “Andhras” is not a bad word as some hate-mongering Telangana separatists have been projecting. In fact, all Telugu speaking are Andhras -- not just people from coastal Andhra Pradesh. Telangana is a name given to the land of Andhras by Muslim rulers.

This chit-chat covered a bit on Satavahanas, Brahma Naidu, and Kakateeyas. If you ask me, this is a must listen podcast for every Telugu person.

MMGL Interview w Chekuri Kasiah 2 of 2

Sri Chekuri Kasiah is a former Chairman of the Kammam Zilla Parishad. He is a veteran politician with deep knowledge of Indian history and the history of Telugu people. He is currently retired from politics and is doing public service in Khammam.

In this part part of the interview, Sri Kasiah shared his views about all the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Andhra Rashtram and Hyderabad State, namely:

Interview – Smt. Shyamala Ghantasala

February 11, marks the 36th death anniversary of late Sri Ghantasala. Though we will never forget him, I just wanted to remind you about him on this occasion with this podcast of an old MMGL archive.

Hope you got a chance to listen to my tribute the Maestro, Sri Ghantasala. In late November 2007, I had the opportunity to talk to Smt. Shyamala Gantasala, the oldest daughter of Sri Ghantasala. Shyamala talked about her childhood memories with her father, how she and her siblings adored him and she disliked some of the high pitched songs she sang. She and her family are blessed for being associated with a legend.

MMGL Interview: IIT Ramaiah

Who needs an introduction to IIT Ramaiah garu? In my days B.Tech at IIT was a destination for those who were fortunate enough to attend some of the top high schools and junior colleges in the country. Many in my generation didn’t even know about IITs until they were in junior college. I happened to know about IIT during the 1st year of my intermediate, which was too late for me to aspire for and prepare for the JEE exam.

Now a days, preparing for IIT starts at kindergarten level. A methodical approach to preparing for IIT was mastered by Sri Ramaiah. He then turned that approach into an educational empire. Students from his coaching institute have the highest success rate at IIT JEE examination, which earned him the title. I met with him during TANA 2007 meeting and conducted this interview. The topic was education. What else do you expect to talk about when two educators chat?

MMGL Interview: Ileana

As a Cultural Committee co-chair, I was actively involved with the TANA 2007 meeting held in Washington DC. According to some estimates, about 12,000 people attended this event. Why this event was so popular? Two words: Bill Clinton.

It was an extremely stressful experience that I will never forget. Despite the physical, emotional and financial drain I suffered at doing this, I was able to interview a few celebrities that attended the meeting and aired them on TeluguOne Radio.
