Costco!

Costco!

————————–

[sound effects]
[with echo ] Boom!

అలాంటివి all sales are ఫైనల్.

—————-

Ending (as part two)

[Put Echo for voice of God]

TORi was covered. While I question the claims made by some operators, this article is an interesting read – at least for me.

Turn up the radio: Time to bond

by Padmini Copporapu

Increasing Number Of Radio Stations Based Abroad Are Dishing Out Programmes With A Telugu Flavour Aarti was going for her morning walk when she heard the unmistakable strains of M S Subbalakshmi’s Venkateswara Suprabhatam streaming out of a house in her Dallas neighbourhood. She did a double take, wondering if she had heard right – she was still in Dallas, Texas wasn’t she? Upon inquiring, Aarti found that the local Indian radio in her area broadcast the desi programme. Ever since, she has regularly tuned into Pravas Vani and Yuva, the two most popular desi radio stations in Dallas.

Those who think radio is passe have obviously overlooked mana Non-Resident Telugus (NRTs) in the United States. Like Aarti, they frequently tune into their favourite Telugu language-based radio programmes. So much so that passionate entrepreneurs have set up many such radio stations. These are fast evolving from being mere entertainment avenues to significant platforms of community bonding, helping local Telugus share, showcase and voice their ideas and concerns.

Madhavi, an RJ from New Jersey who hosts a popular Telugu show on Dhoom FM elaborates, “While entertainment is our basic fodder; I wanted to add more texture to the show. Radio is a clean and effective forum to air our views, gather vox populi and connect with the local community”.

Clearly there’s more to these radio programmes than just music and chitchat. For instance Sridhar Dadi’s Radio Hungama in Houston also started off with popular music-based programmes (Aa Patha Madhuralu), but it now boasts an eclectic portfolio including infotainment, game shows, kids’ talent shows (Pitta Koncham, Kootha Ghanam) and interviews of notable personalities.

While interviews of celebrities such as A R Rehman, S P Balasubramaniam and Sobha Naidu earn these stations an obvious patronage, other programmes serve a more utilitarian purpose. Shows such as ‘Ask your lawyer’ and ‘Dial a Doctor’ are immensely popular, say broadcasters of Radio Hungama and Yuva.

Raghu Malladi owns Pravas Vani a station which broadcasts 10 hours of live programmes in Telugu everyday including literary programmes, interviews, chat shows, call-ins. He says that while he didn’t expect Pravas Vani to be such a huge hit but now that it is, he wants to utilise it to the maximum to help serve the community. Most radio stations also help in publicising activities like Ugaadi celebrations organised by Telugu associations.

Even as the scale of their operations and the degree of their popularity varies; these pioneers claim that they ventured into radio more out of passion than of any commercial interest. Most run on a ad-based revenue model. While some seek to recreate the grand old days of All India Radio, others are giving the traditional radio a modern makeover.

Unlike radio stations which are bound by city limits, TORi (Telugu One Radio on Internet) enjoy seamless coverage. These are webbased radio channels; each with an estimated global listenership of 40-50 thousand people per month.

Not content with conquering the internet, 3G equipped smart phones are his latest target. His team has developed a free Iphone Application and is moving onto developing the same for Android phones.

TORi has made its own tech start to cater to its vast audience base. “Any of our RJs can host a live show, simply with a broadband internet connection and a good headset,” says Mohan Venigalla, host of TORi’s most popular call-in live show ‘Mohana Murali Gaana Lahari’. In fact, some of his loyal listeners have now become RJs themselves.

While this phenomenon is widespread over the US, radio stations in other nations are dishing out prgrammes with a Telugu flavour. The Mauritius Broadcasting Company, for instance, has several programmes such as ‘Bhakti Ranjani, ‘Manam, Mana Samskriti,’Ya Evam Veda Sri Guru Paduka’ and the likes which are very popular with Telugus there. The call-in programmes are especially popular as people get a rare opportunity to interact in Telugu with other Telugu speakers, says the host of a show.

Likewise, the national radio of Malaysia, Minnal FM, broadcasts one and half hours of song-based shows everyday where classic Telugu songs are played. Radio stations in Australia, South Africa and the Middle East too are gaining in popularity by broadcasting Telugu programmes.

Over the past several days, I have been so engulfed with work, in upgrading TORI website and other things. This news is a bit dated – but I came to know about this only after Bhanu Prakash alerted me to it this evening. The fact that I did not even know about this news until now tells you how out of touch with news lately….

The following news is via Indian Express..

An Indian computer scientist, who was brutally attacked by three juveniles three days ago while taking a walk with his family in a New Jersey suburb succumbed to his injuries on Monday, police said.

The three 17-year-old assailants, whose names have been withheld because of their age, have been arrested and now charged with homicide, they said.

49-year-old Divyendu Sinha, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus and presently working as a consultant with Siemens, sustained injuries after he was attacked by three teenagers on Friday night when he was walking with his family near his home in Old Bridge in New Jersey.

You may recall the 1987 Dot-Buster incident when an Indian teen was killed by overzealous groups. Is Joel Stein reflecting a popular anti-Indian sentiment on the rise? Is our behavior in public places is causing this sentiment?

What do you think?

Here we go (via Huffington Post) …

Joel Stein says he was going for humor in his opinion piece, “My Own Private India,” which ran in Monday’s TIME Magazine. But the Indian-American community — members of which serve as the butt of many of Stein’s jokes — aren’t laughing.

Stein’s piece focuses on the cultural changes immigration has brought to his hometown of Edison, N.J. since he grew up there in the 1970′s and 80′s:

“I am very much in favor of immigration everywhere in the U.S. except Edison, N.J. The mostly white suburban town I left when I graduated from high school in 1989 — the town that was called Menlo Park when Thomas Alva Edison set up shop there and was later renamed in his honor — has become home to one of the biggest Indian communities in the U.S., as familiar to people in India as how to instruct stupid Americans to reboot their Internet routers….

For a while, we assumed all Indians were geniuses. Then, in the 1980s, the doctors and engineers brought over their merchant cousins, and we were no longer so sure about the genius thing. In the 1990s, the not-as-brilliant merchants brought their even-less-bright cousins, and we started to understand why India is so damn poor.

Stein’s cracks are not exclusively directed at Indian immigrants — he pokes fun at himself and his (presumably white) childhood friends:

“The A&P I shoplifted from is now an Indian grocery. The multiplex where we snuck into R-rated movies now shows only Bollywood films and serves samosas,” wrote Mr. Stein. “The Italian restaurant that my friends stole cash from as waiters is now Moghul, one of the most famous Indian restaurants in the country. There is an entire generation of white children in Edison who have nowhere to learn crime.”

Several organizations have responded with outrage, criticizing TIME‘s decision to publish the article. For example, the advocacy group South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) issued a statement and online petition in response to Stein’s piece.

“Most offensive is his remarkably blasé tone about the discrimination and hate crimes that targeted the New Jersey South Asian Community during the 1980s,” the SAALT statement reads.

Both Stein and TIME have issued online apologies, saying they never intended to offend readers.

Time reacts to criticism…

We sincerely regret that any of our readers were upset by Joel Stein’s recent humor column “My Own Private India.” It was in no way intended to cause offense.

Stein repents..

I truly feel stomach-sick that I hurt so many people. I was trying to explain how, as someone who believes that immigration has enriched American life and my hometown in particular, I was shocked that I could feel a tiny bit uncomfortable with my changing town when I went to visit it. If we could understand that reaction, we’d be better equipped to debate people on the other side of the immigration issue.

—————-

What do you think? If you are a Desi, are you offended?

Or, is this big ado about nothing?

The author is co-founder and chief executive officer, InfoEdge (India) Ltd, which runs the Naukri.com website. He writes a monthly column on careers and enterprise.

The question I am most frequently asked by business school and engineering college students, who are aspiring to be entrepreneurs, is: “When is it the right time to become an entrepreneur? Should I do it straight after college or should I work for a few years first?”

The truth is that there are success stories of all sorts. There are those who have done it after working for a few years as managers in companies—the Infosys founders are an example. Then there are people who have done it straight out of college—my good friend Kunwar Sachdev of Su-Kam inverters is one such. And there are those who have dropped out of college to become entrepreneurs— Bill Gates is the most famous name that comes to mind. There are people who do college and entrepreneurship side by side—Michael Dell’s story of how he founded and ran Dell from his college room is famous. Finally, there are those who became entrepreneurs without even going to college or completing their school education—the best-known story in India is of Dhirubhai Ambani.

There is no one right answer to these questions. However, you can always find an example to support whatever point of view you support. Time it right: Bill Gates dropped out of college to set up Microsoft.

The argument in favour of becoming an entrepreneur straight out of college is that once you are in a job and you get comfortable with the idea of a regular salary, you will find it extremely difficult to quit to do a start-up. This is especially true if you are from a premier institute and earning a high salary in a well-known company. It becomes worse if some years have elapsed since you finished college and you have now bought a car and a house and have EMIs to service. And later on, when you get married and start a family, it becomes nearly impossible to quit—you crave security.

The single largest reason why people give up on their entrepreneurial aspirations and continue in a job is delay in breaking out after college.

The argument in favour of working for some years in a job before becoming an entrepreneur is that you improve your reality check. It is well known that the Indian education system does not provide a great reality check to students. It takes several years of working after college for graduating students to figure out how the real world actually functions. You learn to work as a subordinate before you become a boss and that experience is important when your company scales up and you are managing a larger team. You acquire skills on the job that you would otherwise not have. You meet customers, get an insight into their needs and an understanding of the market. You get to know about business opportunities. You learn about processes and good practices that are useful years later. You build your network and credentials.

In a nutshell, working for a few years increases your chances of success once you do become an entrepreneur. The flip side is that if you get into a good job and work there for a few years, you may never actually quit to become an entrepreneur.

My view on this is that you should become an entrepreneur only when you are ready. I had worked for five years before I quit and became an entrepreneur. And, in hindsight, I would not do it any other way. I needed those five years to learn and mature and become a better people’s person. And you will know when you are ready. Your inner voice will compel you to do it.

The other time to become an entrepreneur is when you have such a compelling idea that you are totally convinced that it is now or never. Gates often cites this when he talks about his decision to quit college and set up Microsoft. He could see the PC age coming and he just had to be a part of it, but felt it would pass him by if he spent another three years in college. He just had to do it then.

There is a lot to discuss on this subject. For lack of time, I was not able to participate in the discussion started by Sandeep. Here is an excellent depiction of the complicated political and economic continuum, which some see in black-and white.

What do I mean by “black and white?”

“Government is not the solution, government is the problem” makes a great soundbite, even though it means jack. Here is my short summary:

Free Markets are like unicorns and Santa Clause. They don’t exist. Unfettered belief in free markets, nary an acknowledgment of the existence of bubbles and fraud has brought us where we are here today.

I can go on and on – but it will be dry and boring for you if I go on a solo rant. I am hoping to debate Chakravarthy garu about this on the MMGL Show on this Friday, April 16th. [Stay tuned..]

You can visualize for yourself where the following depiction falls in the above illustration. FYI, this scenario was brought to you by the strongest believers in “regulation-free Free-Markets:” Rubin, Summers, Phil Grant, and most importantly Regan and Greenspan.

The two largest items US consumers spend on are 1) Health Care and 2) Education

Since the days of 2008 presidential campaign, so much attention has been focused on rising health care costs. The Great Recession (this is how they are referring to the current economic climate) has left many state budgets in such a disarray that the states are doing everything they could to cut their budgets. Well, the axe is falling on school and college funding.

Except may be in Alaska, the story is the same for schools and colleges in Arizona, Texas North Carolina Virginia, New Jersey, new York or Massachusetts, – not to mention the state that could bring down the next leg of worldwide panic – California.

To compensate for state budget cuts, colleges across the country are planning for tuition hikes: about 5% in Texas to over 30% in California. Tuition is almost certain to go up at George Mason University, which is where I teach. The following excerpt is from Huffington Post:

“We’re one of the largest economies in the world, and we can’t fund the basics,” said Mike Scullin, 29, a graduate student in education who plans to become a high school teacher. “We’re throwing away a generation of students by defunding education.”

The steep economic downturn has forced states to slash funding to K-12 schools, community colleges and universities to cope with plummeting tax revenue.

Experts said schools and colleges could face more severe financial trouble over the next few years as they drain federal stimulus money that temporarily prevented widespread layoffs and classroom cuts.

Protest actions were held at most of the 10 University of California campuses, 23 California State University campuses and many of the state’s 110 community colleges.

Come Fall, you can expect even more widespread protests or even riots across many college campuses in US. Much like the October 2009 protest at UCLA.

On the other hand, the second e-mail I got from my ultimate boss, the (new) Governor of my state (Commonwealth of Virginia) has no mention of tuition hikes. But, I was told to expect furloughs, pay cuts and/or cuts to pension and retirement account contributions.

Pay cut or pension cut, I am thankful that I at least have a job. However, what pains me the most about this is to see an unemployed parent being squeezed even more to pay for the tuition of his/her kid.

Looking at the brighter side, I am so glad that I did my part to let the bankers have their bonuses for last year. Imagine a world where those hard working smart guys of the world being denied their rightful earnings.:)

I would love to talk about this subject on my March 5 Mohana Muralee GaanaLahari show? Any takers?

[Update: March 8, 2010]

I missed this news. More riots happened at UCLA last week. (Video)

Earlier today I was having a chat with Kanaka Prasad. The issue of education (adult and kids) came up in our discussion. A bit later I went to a recruiting event organized by our University, where I talked a bit about degree requirements in our program etc. I came back to my office and checked a few things on the blogosphere I follow. I came across a piece by Karl Denninger on education. I just couldn’t resist the urge to say these few words on education.

Degree is (almost) essential for making a living. The current education system in most countries, including India and the United States helps you get a degree and make a living. What about education? Perhaps, a better question is, “What is education?” Education is accumulation of knowledge. I don’t think that the education system I am used to encourages knowledge accumulation.

I follow Karl Denninger for his insights on financial markets and economic outlook. I have a few areas of disagreements with him. However, as an educator, I couldn’t agree more on the basic premise of his latest piece on Education (Our Educational System’s Primary Failure). It’s all about being curious and learning things on our own! Excerpts:

To succeed a young person needs to be able to do three things – read, write, and understand mathematics. The fourth ingredient is that the innate desire to learn must not be destroyed in their first few years of school.

All children start life wanting to learn. Ever watch a baby? It’s a curious being, is it not? It reaches, it fondles, it touches, it experiments. We put plastic caps in our electrical outlets because one of the experiments a significant number of babies and toddlers will perform is inserting a kitchen fork into said outlet, with bad results.

So how do we go from that to a surly vegetative kid at the age of 9, 10 or 12?

We do it by failing in the essential purpose of education – giving our children the foundational understanding they need, and then getting the hell out of their way!

We want to mold educational experience. To teach “as we want them to learn”, instead of “as they wish to synthesize.”

We’re fools. You, I, our school systems. All of us.

I have one piece of advise to parents with young children. Encourage your children to be curious and learn things on their own, and to pursue what they are passionate about. Don’t force your wishes on to them. To demonstrate to you that I know what I am talking about, I will give you one personal example. In February 2003, when space shuttle Columbia blew-up in the atmosphere during reentry, I was watching TV with my son. I said a couple of things I knew about the space shuttle. He picked up from there and said a whole lot more about the space shuttles – how they are made, launched into orbit, docked in space, re-enter earth, transported from California to Florida as a piggy-back ride on Boeing 747 etc etc. I was not aware of a lot of details he said.

Even though I am a proud father, I do not want to take credit for his knowledge, which he gained on his own. However, some credit is due to my wife and myself, for, we clearly did some things right. When all this happened, none of that stuff about space shuttles was in any of his classes. My son was just 9 year old.

If this sounds like I am bragging about my son, ABSOLUTELY! [I am sure he or his sister will give me a hard time when he sees this. That's OK.]

I also have one advise to those of you who are young and open minded enough to take and use a good piece of advise. Be on continuous quest for knowledge. Knowledge is vast and almost infinite. How much knowledge you can accumulate and about what? My answer: as much as you can and about the things that interest you and you are passionate about. Some of those things that SHOULD interest you is about yourself, your family, your past and your heritage. i.e. history!

Seeking knowledge is like going to a huge lake with a bucket. The maximum you can get is what the bucket can hold. The practical maximum is what you can carry. What is shameful is, returning with an empty bucket from a trip you only get to take once! That’s why they say, the mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Dr. Gopi Podila was among the three faculty members who were killed by Amy Bishop, a faculty member at University of Alabama who was denied tenure. The Indian American professor Podila’s research interests included functional genomics of plant-microbe interactions and plant molecular biology and biotechnology.

My condolences to the families of the victims. What more can I say about this insanity?

More about Dr. Padila from Hutsville Times:

Dr. Gopi Podila, who came to Huntsville 10 years ago, predicted the city was about to emerge as a biotech hub in the new South.

“Biotech has been a hidden gem here,” said Podila during an interview for the local R&D Report magazine in 2008. “You need a critical mass to be really visible. I think it’s getting there.”

Podila, 52, left a teaching position at Michigan Technological University in 2000 to become the chair of the Biology Department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

….

“We needed a department chair who was an experienced researcher, an accomplished biologist,” said Dr. Lewis Radonovich, former UAH provost. “Gopi was a highly principled, fine human being. He was a solid man, a good man. He tried very hard to support his young faculty.”

…The Biology Department was the most popular in the College of Science, Fix said, teaching about 450 undergraduates. He said the biology faculty members were particularly cooperative. To some degree, that started with Podila.

“He was a leader for the department,” Fix said. “He was a very warm person. He was funny and a good advocate for his department.”

Rena Webb, who is working on her masters degree in biology, said Podila was her adviser. “He really is the nicest man I’ve ever known,” said Webb. “You don’t feel like a graduate student, you feel like part of a family.

Yikes…

Mid-Atlantic states barely dug themselves out of the 30+ inch piles from last Fri-Sat snow.

Many streets are only operating in as single lanes. More is on the way (it is already here in DC). We are pretty much snowed in for the last 5 days. Another 10-20 inches is expected tonight and tomorrow. Looks like we are stuck for a few more days.
