There are so many movies in which the hero gets stuck between two wives. Me thinks that those are the fantasies of the story writer or the producer or the director. Sri M. Bala Muralikrishna was quoted as saying, you have no idea how bad it is to have two wives. While singing “intiloni poru inthintha kaadaya iddaroo pellalu vadduraa sivuda… eddunekke neeku, eddulaanti naaku..” Ghantasala was quoted as saying to Samudrala Jr, “Did you write this about me?”

Anything KV Reddy did, he did it on a super grand scale. So are his fantasies! Why two, why not four? And there it is. And then he imagined a situation in which the hero has to entertain all four. Oho… “yeko neko namasmi…” trust me, I tried. It won’t work. But the song is beautiful. Enjoy.

It looks like every Telugu entertainment channel (including TORi) are promoting voting for Sriram as the next Indian idol. I just informed TORi team to change the campaign to “don’t forget to vote for Sriram – if and only if you believe that Sriram is the best.”

If you don’t believe in the product – don’t buy it or don’t promote it. It is very discriminatory to vote for somebody just because he is ‘one of us.’

KV Reddy is undoubtedly the best director in the 76 year history of Telugu cinema. He can take a silly fantasy and embed it in Mahabharat epic (Mayabazar) or even sillier fantasy set in medieval times (Jagadekaveeruni Katha) or a regular social drama (Donga Ramudu) and make a fantastic entertainer out of each one of them. literally thousands of pages of history was and still being written about Mayabazar. I am not sure if I can add more to those thousands of pages. However, in this video essay, I want to take time to talk about his other sensational hit – Jagadekaveeruni Katha. The 9-part video essay’s focus is on the songs, all of which were written by Pingali Nagendra Rao and composed by Pendyala Nageswara Rao.

Song #1: Jalakaalaatalao, Gala Gala Paatalalo: This is the first song in the movie and was picturized on four devakanyas (played by B Saroja Devi, L Vijayalakshmi, Jayanthi and ??), as they are taking a bath in some unspecified lake. Four beautiful ladies – all taking a bath. Imagine all the skin they would have shown for a scene like this in current day movies. No, that is not KV Reddy’s style. He showed nothing vulgar. But everything is romantic. There is no skin is on display here. Only thing we get to see much is their beautiful faces, their eyes, the expressions in their eyes and their mesmerizing smiles. To the guys out there – O, halaa, don’t you get more erotic kick out of a song-scene like this than all the skin you see in movies of current years?

Song #2: O Cheli, O Sakhi, Oho Madeeya Mohini: As soon as above song is done, the hero (NTR) shows up. Oh yes, four devakanyas in one place! This is exactly what he was looking for. daam didu doom da daa… she looks good. She and she, and she too looks good. Inkem! Paata andukunnadu.o cheli, o sakh oho madeeya mohini. Pay attention to the body language action by the ladies and NTR. So convincing! A beautiful song.

A Tribute to Sri Ghantasala (Special MMGL)

This special tribute to Sri Ghantasala, the Maestro, was first aired on June 14, 2007 as Father’s Day special. In this episode I profiled Sri Ghantasala as a person and as an inspiration for youth. Later this episode was repeated twice, either in full as in part. Presented in this podcast is only the portion on Ghantasala. I consider this tribute to be one of the best shows I have ever done.

I was very touched by this feedback. I felt proud and happy. After all, in Ghantasala’s own words “An artist’s life is fulfilled when the art touches and makes a difference in people’s lives.” I am not an artist – I just shed light on a great artist from a different angle. Let me present you the unforgettable and mostly forgotten song by us (Telugu). I think the original version is Hindi and please correct if I am wrong. Hindi version is amazing and with divine Kishore Kumar’s voice it is brilliantly composed tune. Then comes the Tamil version composed by Ilayaraja. Looks like it is a remake of the original Hindi movie and you will figure out by looking at videos. Both the songs are pretty close but if you concentrate on the guitar part of tamil version, I am sure, you will be amazed. SPB mentioned in so many interviews about this song and the hard work behind the composition. For example, it took 21 takes to get the guitar tunes as per Ilayaraja’s satisfaction. Last but not the least is Telugu version. There is nothing to talk about it since its a dubbed one. Enjoy!

Digital Piracy and My 01 Cents

Decimal or binary, it won’t make much of a difference – of course, ‘my 01 cents’ is ‘my two cents.’ I could add more, but that is where digital piracy is taking some of my (rather large) investments.

Earlier on TeluGlobe, Krishna Chaitanya posted an excellent article on digital piracy and its effect on the Telugu entertainment industry. I was going to add to that but lately, finding time has become a kind of luxury for me.

First, here is my a quick comment on digital piracy. Piracy is not just the problem of entertainment industry. As a director on the board of TeluguOne, I know how piracy can affect businesses and jobs, Not to belabor the point – there is a connection between cheap money (read Feds) and piracy. When new companies only created number of ‘eye-balls’ as business (dot-coms) as opposed to real business, and still got rewarded via sky high stock prices, it is inevitable to see the fall-out. [More on this later.]

Today Subba Rao garu commented on Krishna Chaitanya’s post. This well articulated argument deserves to be a stand-alone article. Here it is:

The cost of making movies is always high and many crores are at stake. Producer puts all his money to make more money. Basically he is investing his money for better returns. But due to piracy he is losing viewership and money too. Are all the producers losing money? No. I don’t think so. Big producers are getting their investment with returns even before the movie is released by what they call “marketing”. It is always the small time producer who is effected by this piracy. And who is responsible for this? The government? People who watch the pirated movies? I don’t think so. The people who are responsible for creating this situation are big time producers/actors. They offer huge remuneration to actors and technicians. This makes the price of the ticket sky-high. How many can afford this? So people who cant afford this go for pirated versions. I am not supporting the people who watch/encourage the pirated versions of the movies.

This piracy cannot be prevented. Movie is for entertainment and everybody wants some fun in their life. The best way is to bring in some change in the economics of movies. If a movie is declared a hit, everyone who has a role in it deserves a pat on the back and and if it bombs they will have to share the pain too..

So, my idea is all the big cheques should be stopped.

The technicians/extras should be paid as they should. The high paid people should be paid token amount when signing. After the movie is released and the profits should be shared between the high paid actors/technicians. If there is loss, the burnt should be shared and the high paid will not get anything.

But for all these, The ticket prices in theaters should be brought down. Anyone would love to watch a new movie in a theater where the print is crystal clear with great sound. No one would love to watch a movie in cam print or another which is not master and without great sound.

Will this happen? Not sure. How many big producers supported this movie producer who went on strike.?

Anyway this is my opinion.

Chandamama Ravayya Sung by People of Various Nations

Chandamama Chandamama Ravayya (not Chandamama Rave!) is some song composed in Telugu which they call it a folk tune from Chennai. But this was when there was much more unity among Telugu people and people in general.
The aim of this group, Playing for Change, is to use music as a means of connecting people world over. Let’s first hope for unity among Telugu people !!

Poetic Eccentricity on Rivers (Songs and Commentary)

Being a poet is essentially being eccentric. Our innate desire to be eccentric makes us appreciate strange metaphors in poems and songs. A Telugu euphemism for poetic eccentricity is ‘bhaavukatha.’ If it were up to a person with no romantic touch, he/she would call this eccentricity ‘paithyam.’ About three years ago I guest hosted a few ‘paatalapallaki‘ shows on TeluguOne Radio. The following playlist belongs to one of those shows, and my commentary was meant to bridge songs on “Rivers.”

If you can’t bear listening to my ‘paithyam,’ on their ‘paithyam‘ just skip my voice bits and listen to the songs only. They are good songs. [Sorry, I could not make this a downloadable podcast because of problems with rights for songs.]

Songs Playlists on TeluGlobe

TeluGlobe is an ambitious project, the goal of which is to create a social network for Telugu people with a global perspective. I am not expecting this place to be meant solely for serious discussions. I expect visitors to kick their shoes, relax while listening to music and/or have some fun. I am one of those millions who love to listen to Telugu light music. I put most of my songs collection on this site under page: Music Library.

It is a HUGE database with over 13,500 songs. I cannot say that all songs in the database are good ones. The quality ranges from +5 stars to -5 stars. As much as I try to categorize them into “playlists” I do not find any time. Today, I started the process of creating TeluGlobe playlists to get things rolling. It is easy to select from a couple of hundred good playlists than selecting from a database of 13,000+ songs.
